Newnan has been the county seat of Coweta, one of Georgia´s oldest counties, since1826 when the land was ceded from the Lower Creek Indians by Chief McIntosh. The son of William McIntosh, a Scottish gentleman, and Senoia Henneha of the Lower Creek Coweta-Cussita Towns, Chief McIntosh spent his life bringing progress and peace to the Coweta and Fayette county areas of Georgia, establishing the land south of Atlanta for settlement, commerce, and community. Newnan is best known for its rows and rows of preserved antebellum estates, dating back to key figures and events in the Civil War, and pre war eras, earning it the name "City of Homes". It also boasts an above average state SAT 1 score of 1508, making it well above the Georgia average of 1477.
